Yellow Labrador Retriever (short coat) : : Male (neutered) : : Large
HERCULES is a 6 year old neutered yellow male that weighs 70 pounds. Hercules was found wandering as a stray in Salinas, but the shelter was excited because he had a chip. No problem, they thought. His owner will surely come for him. When the shelter contacted the owners, they found out the dog had originated from Nevada. How he got to Salinas no one knows. Hercules is a sweet boy who is very, very thin. You can see his ribs, his backbone and his hip bones. Still, as labs are, he's happy and thrilled to see you. He is an AVID retriever. He gets so excited when he sees a ball, frisbee (or ANYTHING "throwable") that he jumps straight up in the air in anticipation. He usually doesn't jump on you and will sit when told to sit and wait for the ball to be thrown. He knows sit, down, stay, will come when called, and walks quite well on a leash. He doesn't have much interest in other dogs but is fine with them. We suspect the same may be true of cats. Hercules also has an amazing ability to HEAR or FEEL gopher activity under the ground. He was in a yard in the shelter that was covered with gopher mounds. He stood very still, cocked his head and moved all around following the progress of the gopher underground. When one popped up, he dove for it, but missed, of course. He is, strangely enough, not a digger. He didn't dig in any of the holes, except the one that the gopher's head came up out of and he stopped immediately after the gopher disappeared. Don't know if this could be turned into an act for David Letterman or not, but we think he's quite clever. He's a sweet dog who loves to be petted (after the ball is put away). We believe he is housebroken. His coat is dry and he needs some good food and care, but he'll return the favor with great devotion. He has wonderful big brown eyes and is absolutely stunning when he cocks his ears. Once he gains 10-15 pounds he'll be a great looking boy. He's a field lab with just a touch of gray on his muzzle and is very athletic. More about HerculesGood with Dogs |
